New Monsters: Hag-Flame and Devil-Flame

Hi everyone! Sorry for the recent silence, but these last couple of weeks have been pretty brutal. Hopefully things will get back on track this week. However, I’d be remiss to leave you all without my planned Halloween treat, two new monsters that can also serve as Familiars. But enough of my jabbering, here’s the monsters:

Delay on Today’s Post (and a Small Announcement)

Hey there! I’m just posting this to explain that I’m delaying today’s post until Tuesday, as it needed to be heavily reworked given the state it was currently in. An important part of the reason most of these things are as playable as they are to begin with is all thanks to the people that help me check over, modify, test, and design these, particularly my friends Steven and Quiver! Additionally, I’m going to do a little bit of shameless self-promotion right now, as I’ve recently set up a Ko-Fi for this blog. Commissioning art for the blog gets expensive, so any support you could give would allow me to maintain not only the current rate of content, but also the excellent art that goes along with many of these posts!

Gods: Ghomrauth and Chalcanth

This week we’re covering two of the gods of Amrynth, their portfolios, combined church, and followers. As a bonus treat, we’re also going to throw in a few shadow-themed spells at the end!

New Monster: Skirmisher Wraith

In my last post you all met the Seeker Wraith, an Ancestor Wraith tied strongly to the divine domain of Knowledge. Now we’re doing a bit of a 180, as today’s Wraith is the Skirmisher Wraith, a creature intrinsically tied to the divine domain of War.

New Monster: Seeker Wraith

Alright, we’re back to monsters this week with two monsters that share a category of sorts. Now, the wraith has always been one of my absolute favorite types of undead, and I’ve always felt it a shame that we don’t have more variants and focus on them, so early on I decided to make some variants, particularly lower level ones that can serve as both combat or social encounters. Because of this, I’ve built some Wraiths that fall into a category that I like to refer to as “Ancestor Wraiths”. These Wraiths are often strongly tied to one or more divine domains, likely having been very devoted to an associated diety in life, with abilities that reflect their domain. These Wraiths are likely to align themselves with individuals or organizations that share their goals or follow gods within their domain.

First up we have the Seeker Wraith! An Ancestor Wraith innately tied to the Knowledge Domain.

Bard Subclass: The College of Haunting

“As the gaunt half-elf woman wanders through the foggy night, her feet move silently in arrhythmic and unsettling patterns, and the only sound that fills the area is the discordant and chaotic hiss and shriek of her violin. Her bloodshot, wide eyes dart around as she takes in here surroundings, the lights of her home town visible ahead. They had called her mad, claimed her music was flawed and unsettling, but she would show them, now that she had her adoring admirers dancing around her they would see their error. The foul stench of death filled the air as rotting zombies and putrid ghouls moved around her, their bodies swaying and jittering like reeds in a terrible storm, moving with each pull of her bow across the strings. Soon, this vile host is upon the town, and the a chorus of shrieks and cries joins her maddening tempo.”

Group Patron: The Wraith Lord

Alright everybody! It’s October now, my favorite time of year! In the spirit of the season, this month’s theme will be undeath. Additionally, while most months I intend to release a single new subclass, this month I will be releasing two. Now without further ado, here is the Wraith Lord:

Alvalus, better known as The Wraith Lord, is an ancient and enigmatic Lich. The nature of his ascension to lichdom is rather mysterious, especially given his seeming inability to give any coherent answers when questioned about it. What is known is that his transformation, while having robbed him of a good amount of his grasp on the present reality, allowed him to retain much of his personality, as well as his Chaotic Good alignment. This, combined with him being a champion of Chalcanth (A god of forgotten knowledge and the honored dead, that will come up in a post soon), has conferred him the unique ability to restore the minds and original souls of certain undead creatures. Because of the unusual curse he is under, he is rather senile and can come off as strange or enigmatic. Additionally, he may have difficulty remembering group member names, and if a character dies and is replaced by a new one, he just may spend the rest of the campaign referring to that character by the old one’s name, assuming them to be one and the same. His strange ramblings can seemingly go on with no end, often describing silly, crude, or improbable adventures that he may have gone on with friends as a mortal.

New Monster: Assassin Drake

Alright, so I’m starting off with a big one here. This is one of my favorite monsters to run for a short campaign, or for an arc in a longer one. In designing the Assassin Drake, I actually worked alongside one of my regular players, and took considerable inspiration from memory-editing monsters like the infamous False Hydra. That said, whilst the False Hydra is a much more narrative-heavy monster, this one is much more combat oriented in its memory-altering abilities. The core concept is for an ambush hunter that edits the players’ memories of what it is after escaping from combat.
